SHPE'd Abroad
SHPE’d Abroad is an annual program since 2013. Our international outreach continues through SHPE’d Abroad, a week-long educational program designed to introduce middle and high school students in Latinoamerica to STEM. All expenses paid for our members.

SHPE Jr
at César Chávez Academy High School
What it is?
SHPE-UM has developed a long-standing relationship with César Chávez Academy High School through its SHPE Jr. Chapter. Here, we combine technical education (3D design, circuitry, Arduino robotics) with professional development workshops (resume building, LinkedIn sessions, and college prep).
This past year, our partnership deepened when the university unexpectedly withdrew from participating in underrepresented high school outreach, including César Chávez’s spring college fair. In response, César Chávez reached out to SHPE-UM directly to step in as representatives for the University of Michigan.
At this event, SHPE-UM members hosted bilingual tabling sessions, ensuring accessibility for families and community members.
Volunteers provided mentorship, guidance, and representation for Hispanic and first-generation students, reinforcing trust and reliability with our community partner. We also coordinated a daycare for parents, further enabling families to attend and participate in this pivotal college-readiness event. This moment highlighted our chapter’s credibility, responsiveness, and unwavering dedication to our community, especially in times of institutional uncertainty.
Discover Engineering
Typically with our SHPE Jr. Chapter in César Chávez Academy High School
What it is?
a full-day immersion experience for students from César Chávez Academy. Participants engage in student panels, campus tours of both Central and North Campus, and hands-on design challenges that bring engineering to life.
The event offers first-generation, Latin American students an authentic glimpse into university life while connecting them with SHPE mentors who share similar cultural and academic experiences. Through Discover Engineering, SHPE-UM fosters belonging and aspiration in the next generation of Hispanic engineers.
RISE (Reaching Incoming Student Engineers) Program
2025 with the Colegio de Estudios Científicos y Tecnológicos del Estado de México, Plantel San José del Rincón
What it is?
Complementing our in-person work, the RISE Program extends our reach virtually across Latin America. This 4-day bilingual program, led by SHPE-UM volunteers, teaches high school students introductory C++ programming, game design, circuit fundamentals, and Arduino simulation.
RISE 2025 partnered with CECyTEM Plantel San José del Rincón in Mexico, following our 2024 collaboration in Costa Rica. This continuity marks SHPE-UM as one of the few U.S. student-led organizations conducting recurring international STEM education entirely in Spanish.
This year’s RISE incorporated discussions on AI ethics and engineering simulation, further evolving our global curriculum. These ongoing partnerships strengthen bridges between Latin American schools and higher education, demonstrating SHPE-UM’s global outlook on service and commitment to sustainable growth.
